Sugaring is a method of hair removal that dates back to the 1900 BC time period and is considered an ancient Egyptian art. It involves using a paste made of sugar, water, and citric acid to remove hair from the root. The sugar paste is applied in the opposite direction of the hair growth and then quickly flicked off of the skin in the direction of hair growth; eliminating breakage and ingrown hairs. Sugar paste is relatively warm, adheres only to the hair and dead skin, and can remove hair as short as 1/4 of an inch long.
Exfoliation: Gently exfoliate within the week of your appointment using a scrub or mitt. This helps remove dead skin cells, allowing the sugar paste to adhere better to the hair.
Hair Length: For optimal results, hair should be about 1/4 of an inch long. If the hair is too short, the sugar may not grab it properly. If you have shaved, please wait at least 2 weeks to allow the hair to grow long enough.
Avoid Lotions or Oils: Do not apply lotions, oils, or deodorant to the area on the day of the appointment, as these can interfere with the sugar paste’s effectiveness.
Pain Management: If you are concerned about the pain, feel free to take pain relievers like ibuprofen or tylenol 30 minutes before the appointment to minimize discomfort.
No Sun Exposure: Avoid sun exposure or tanning before the appointment to prevent irritation.
Maintenance is anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks, but it varies by individual as it is dependent on your hair growth cycle.
Pretty much all parts, from the hair on your face down to the hair on your toes.
The scalp, beard, mustache, inner ears, and nostrils cannot be sugared.
Yes! Homebody Sugaring offers services for men too. The only service that isn’t available to book for men is an Egyptian service, which is a male version of a Brazilian.
Yes, sugaring can hurt. But pain levels vary based on your personal pain tolerance and skin sensitivity.
It is not recommended to shave in between appointments as it would defeat the purpose of getting sugared. If you shave between appointments, it will disrupt the growth cycles. When you shave, you're cutting the hair at the surface of the skin, giving the hair a blunt tip. This can cause the hair to grow back at different rates and stages, leading to mismatched hairs at your next service.
New clients will typically have tiny 'stubs' of hair leftover and may notice quicker regrowth because some hairs were under the skin or too short to be extracted. It usually takes several sessions to be completely hair free in the days and weeks following the appointment. Keep in mind that there are also a few factors that influence hair growth cycles such as genetics, age, hormones, and environmental factors.
Naturally, your hair is always in different phases of the hair growth cycle. Which is why some hairs will be too short to remove during the first sugaring appointment, others may not have even pushed through the surface of the skin, and yet some may be past the growth phase and are ready to fall out.
There are 3 phases of the hair growth cycle. The first one is the Anagen phase and it is the active growth phase. During this phase, nourishment of the hair follicle via blood supply enables new hair growth. The second one is the Catagen phase. This is a transitional phase where the hair growth slows down and the hair follicles detach from the blood supply. While the hair is no longer actively growing, it remains anchored in the hair follicle. This period is short, lasting 2 to 4 weeks on average. The Telogen phase is the final phase where the hair is at rest. The old hair sheds, creating space for new hair growth to begin. So any hairs that have not made it past the surface of the skin or are not at least 1/4 of an inch long will not be removed.
Absolutely! Just make sure to wear a tampon, menstrual cup or disc so the service can be done. Please keep in mind that being on your period may cause more sensitivity and discomfort when getting sugared.
Absolutely! Sugaring is safe for pregnant women. For more comfortability during your service, feel free to request a pillow if it is difficult to fully lie down on your back. After you give birth, it is recommended to wait anywhere between 1 to 3 months before coming back in for a service.
It depends on what body part you are getting sugared, the type of hair you have, and how much.
If you feel you have dense/and or thick hair, please book the appropriate service to make sure there is an adequate amount of time to finish the appointment.
